How REVERSE ENGINEERING is done using SOLIDWORKS.
What Is Reverse Engineering?
The design process using SOLIDWORKS 3D CAD to create new designs or recreate existing designs based on ones that already exist. Reverse engineering can accelerate product development and reduce risk, save time, and increase productivity.
Some of the Reverse Engineering tools used in this article are:
- Surfacing Tools that enable creation and editing of complex geometry, including stylish, curve-continuous surfaces.
- Auto Trace to import image files of paper sketches to begin your design.
Now we have to make the model using the tools mentioned above.
How to make Reverse Engineering concept in Solidworks 3D CAD?
First enable the add-in by going to Tools > Add-ins, then choose Autotrace from the list of available add-ins.
Open a new sketch.
Then go to Tools > Sketch Tools > Sketch Picture to browse picture.
Position the picture in the window by using sketch picture properties on left side mentioned below. Ensure that the values as per our dimensions.
Set the properties on the first page of the Sketch Picture Property Manager as necessary.
After positioned picture, click the blue arrow in the Property Manager if you want to advance to the next page.
The first page of Sketch Picture Property Manager controls the picture’s position, size, angle, orientation, aspect ratio setting, and transparency.
The second page of the Sketch Picture Property Manager enables you to trace outlines or select areas by color to create vector data using the Autotrace tool.
Select a tool for Image Type.
Select a tool for Selection tools, and create a border around the image you want to trace.
Click Begin trace.
You can use the eyedrop tool, window select tool, or any of the others in the list to draw or capture the outline of the sketch.
You can adjust the 4 sliders to get the result was looking for, then click Apply and/or OK.
The blue lines show the sketch entities. As you can see they are not perfect. Adjust the sliders in the adjustments area and the accuracy will change.
Revolve the sketch using surface feature tools.
By the procedure, Using surface sweep and surface loft feature, draw and recreate the handle of the model.
You need to fully define the sketches for these features.
After completed the above steps, trim the inner surfaces using the surface trim feature to merge edges.
Then Knit the following edges you need to join without a gap.
Now fill the selection box with the surfaces you wish to knit. Gap control allows you to control how big gaps will be knit shut and how big caps will be left.
