Introduction:

The Compare Documents command in SolidWorks is used to compare the document properties, features, geometry, and bill of materials between two documents. The comparison of two documents can be compared in an overlay window to identify the changes that occurred in the documents.

For example, in an industry, a product design has two or more revisions. If the user uses the standard method to compare the difference between those product design revisions, it takes more time. As an alternative, the user can easily use this method to compare two different documents to save time.

5 Steps involved in Compare/Identify changes between documents 

Step 1:Select & Compare Documents

Click Tools --> Compare --> Documents

 

The above image shows that the user could open the two documents for comparison and follow the above steps.

Step 2: Run Comparison

The Compare Command will be opened in the Task Pane. Then follow the below steps:

    • In Reference Document Click the drop-down button and select the File Base_Bracket_&. SLDPRT.
    • In the Modified Document drop-down button select the File Base_Bracket_1&. SLDPRT.
    • In Items to Compare, Select the Check box for Document properties, Features, Geometry à Align parts.
    • Click Run Comparison Button.

STEP 3: Compare Document Result

In this step, the compare document shows the File Properties, Part Properties, and Document Properties - Detailing of the two Documents.

    • Mass
    • Volume
    • Coordinates of X, Y, and Z (Center of Mass)

This step shows the difference between the two document Features.

Creating a SOLIDWORKS ID:

1. Use this link for creating a SOLIDWORKS ID  

Click the link http://customerportal.solidworks.com/  (OR) Use in the internet browser > Type SOLIDWORKS.com > Click menu in upper right corner > Select SW customer portal

Now enter your e-mail address and serial number > CLICK Next.

It doesn’t matter if you enter a Standalone license or Network license serial number.

3. Activation link (OR) Company details

Generally, the main purpose of indented BOM in SOLIDWORKS is to show all the parts inside an assembly and subassembly in detail.

Sometimes when we use a standard assembly component item in SOLIDWORKS for creating a model which is a bought-out and SOLIDWORKS consider that as an assembly and it will list all the part in that assembly in indented BOM. Since it is a bought-out item our requirement will be it needs to appear as  a single part in our BOM

If we save that assembly as a part and use it in the assembly all the kinematic motion will be lost. And we can’t use the motion in the assembly

Let me insert an assembly to the assembly and then take the BOM for example.

In this case, the hydraulic cylinder line item number 6 is a brought our item, and we need it as a single line item, lets's see how we can do it in this blog

Select and right-click on the configuration.

The SOLIDWORKS Costing tool helps you calculate how much it costs to manufacture sheet metal, machined, multi-body parts, and assemblies, as well as plastic molded cast, 3D printed parts, and multibody weldments by automating the cost estimation and quotation process.

Steps involved in evaluating the Cost of a Sheet Metal Part:

The software depends on the un suppressing of flat patterns in sheet metal parts to determine the cut paths. If you apply costing to a sheet metal part for which the flat pattern cannot be unsuppressed that leads to incorrect costing.

Step 1:

In a sheet metal part, click Costing (Tools toolbar or the Evaluate tab on the Command Manager) or Tools > SOLIDWORKS Applications > Costing.

If there is enough information in the sheet metal template, and if the part has a material assigned to it that matches the template, a cost estimate is calculated and the Costing Task Pane displays the Estimated Cost Per Part.

If there is not enough information in the template, or if you want to edit the Costing input values, follow the steps below.

 

Step 2:

Under Costing Template, select a template. Default templates are available or you can create templates to use custom manufacturing data. Lets see how to create a new Sheet Metal Template.

In Material section, select Class, Name, and Thickness from template if they are not populated. The Class, Name, and Thickness from template are populated if the material in the part matches the sheet metal template.

The Material cost is the cost in the template for the selected Class, Name, and Thickness from template combination. You can override Material cost without editing the template. Overrides affect only the part that is open, not the template. If you override Material cost, the field appears in yellow.

 

Step 3:

Select Stock Type from Template and choose Material Weight. Select an item to define the material usage under area to cost option. Under Quantity, set the Total number of parts and Lot size.

Optionally, under Markup/Discount, adjust the material cost or the total cost using a percentage factor.

The software extracts material information from the material set in the part and performs a cost estimate. The Costing Manager displays manufacturing features such as cut paths and bends in the part. The Costing Task Pane displays the Estimated Cost Per Part.

PURPOSE OF TASK SCHEDULER

The Task Scheduler allows you to perform automated tasks on a computer. you can schedule any program to run at any time for you.

You can access SOLIDWORKS TASK SCHEDULER in two different locations,

    • Click the print file in the task list.
    • Add a specific file or folder to print.
    • Click an option for printer setting.
    • Set the printer name, sheet size, no of copies.
    • Set the scheduling date and time.
    • Click finish for scheduling.

Note: your drawing sheet size and printer set size must be in same.

 

IMPORT FILES

            You can schedule tasks to import Parasolid, IGES, STEP, ACIS, VDAFS, SLDXML, and Rhino files into SOLIDWORKS part (*.sldprt) files. You can import individual files or all files of a specified type within a folder.

You can schedule tasks to export SOLIDWORKS documents into other formats. You can export individual files or all files of a specified type within a folder.

4 Steps to fix interference detection in SOLIDWORKS

SOLIDWORKS has a built-in interference detection tool which can be used to identify potential interferences between mating parts. The steps to check for interference are as follows:

1. Open the assembly file and select the mating parts to be checked for interference.
2. Click on the interference detection tool under the Assembly toolbar.
3. The interference detection window will open up. Select the appropriate options and click on the OK button.
4. SOLIDWORKS will check for interferences between the selected parts and generate a report.

In the below example we will be analyzing component interference's found within the assembly interference, and  detection analyzes geometry.

How to identify Interference detection in SOLIDWORKS?

First, Interference detection is found within “Evaluate tab” in tools.

Note: It is easy to see interference's but sometimes it can be difficult to determine. By default, the selected component will be assembly. You can delete it by right-clicking on the name of the assembly and delete.

To select new parts, click on the desired area in the Graphics window.

How to solve it?

To solve we need to calculate interference's within the entire assembly or specify components and then calculate for entire component.

As a result, the interference detection highlights the overlapping volumes of both components as transparent object.

Next, check the mates associated with the component using view mates tool option. Now we know the distance between the two interfering components.

Adjust the dimension & check for interference till you can see there are no longer any interference between the selected components. After making all the corrections, functionality between the components is  .

In this blog we are going to see how we can use a hide function in “Pack and Go” option for replacing the text in the file name.

Pack and go option is one of the popular options that we all use to know; it will help us to get all the reference files of any assembly or drawing so you can share can it with others or to create a complete backup.

 

To open Pack and Go dialog box Select File --> Pack and GO

Prefix and suffix option in the pack and go dialogue box will use to add the text in front or back of your file name correspondingly

For example, you have added R1 in your suffix and saved a file for a revision change

Revision change or renaming in SOLIDWORKS

Now you need to make a revision R2 in the renamed file

In this scenario, you can use the option select/replace

Click the button and you will see the dialogue box as below

Now you can just enter R1 in find and R2 in replace and then close select/replace dialogue box

So all your file name has been renamed from R1 to R2.

You also have two check boxes as case sensitive and exact match.

Case sensitive check box will help to ignore case sensitivity in the characters

And Exact match check box will help you to relax the space between the word

For example, if you have a file name “universal jointR1” you find in R1 will not help to find this R1 since this jointR1 is a single word, in this case, you can uncheck the exact match check box so it will recognize R1 and it can be replaced with R2

What is a drawing view?

A drawing view is a type of dynamic sheet that is used to display information about a model. It is created using an embedded sheet and a dynamic sheet.

You can have multiple drawings open at the same time, and each drawing has an independent sheet with its own properties. When you close any one of them, it will also close all the other drawings that are other sub-elements of that sheet.

The embedded sheet displays the model, and the dynamic sheet is what you see when you open the drawing. In other words, the embedded sheet is the model, and the dynamic sheet is the cover sheet.

What are empty drawing views?

Empty drawing views are a problem related to the missing view on a sheet while drawing. It is a very common issue in SOLIDWORKS, and it can happen for many different reasons.

One reason why you may see an empty sheet is because of missing views. When these are missing, the sheet will show nothing. In short, if there are no views showing on a sheet, it won’t show anything.

Another reason why you may see an empty sheet is that you have an issue with the view settings of the sheet. When these are set to invisible, the sheet view will show nothing.

If you are experiencing the problem that all the views of the sheet are missing, then you can try the following solutions.

How to find empty drawing views in SOLIDWORKS?

As mentioned previously, empty drawing views are caused by missing or hidden views on a sheet. You can easily spot them because the sheet will be completely empty.

There are two ways to find out if you have any empty drawing views. The first one is by using the View Status command. Simply click on the status bar at the top of the drawing area, and you will see this option.

The second way is by using the View Control command. This is found under the View menu, and it gives you more options related to the views on a sheet.

Solve the problem with SOLIDWORKS Drawing Views

The most efficient way to solve the problem with SOLIDWORKS drawing views is by changing the view settings of the sheet. If you have an empty sheet because of hidden views, you can simply change the view settings of the sheet to visible.

You can also change the options by right-clicking on the sheet tab and selecting the view settings from the context menu. In both cases, you will have the view settings visible on the sheet.

If you don’t want the sheet to show anything, simply change the settings to invisible. If you want to display something, change the settings accordingly.

Simply changing the view settings of the sheet won’t solve the problem, but it will at least let you see something. You should also change the view settings in the model so that it overrides the settings of the sheet.

What causes views to be empty?

What happened was that the model(s) may have been moved from their previous folder to another folder, but the drawing is not updated with references, so it opens with blank displays Because the specified model drawing does not expect it to be.

If the drawing is already open while the model is moved to the new location, the issue is now resolved. The drawing reference will be updated.

How to resolve the empty view Issue?

  • Close the drawing (no need to save)
  • Next, we have to choose Solidworks Home tab > resent document > reference

 

Select references

 

Select File --> Open --> Select the drawing, but do not open yet --> References --> Double-click the model --> browse to the model’s new location

SOLIDWORKS 3D Interconnect and Extracting Features

The SOLIDWORKS 3D InterConnect feature enables you to create solid models from other CAD data, including CATIA and Pro/Engineer. Extracting allows for the ability to reverse engineer parts using SOLIDWORKS by removing material from a complete part, generating features that were cut during the process.

SOLIDWORKS has the capability to work with third-party native CAD data files which include ACIS, Autodesk Inventor, CATIA v5 (.CAT part, .CAT Product), IGES, PTC, SOLID EDGE, NX files as shown in Fig(A)

Importing STEP/IGES files and Extracting the Features

SOLIDWORKS has a special option to extract and recognize all the features from other CAD files or STEP/IGES files.

Let us see the step by step process for extracting features from a STEP file

Step 1:

Open a STEP file directly into SOLIDWORKS. Once after opening, the part will be viewed as an imported STEP part as shown in fig (C)

Step 2:

Right-clicking the STEP part file allows you to click on the “Dissolve feature” option which will prompt you to break the link of the part initially as shown in Fig (D)

The below picture shows you the break link dialog box after clicking on the dissolve feature. Click on the “yes, break the link” option as shown in Fig (E)

Step 3:

Breaking the link from the previous step will convert the step part file into an imported geometry. You can extract the feature only after converting it into an imported file.

Right-click the imported file and go to feature works -> Recognize features. This will induce the user to extract the standard features or sheet metal features as per the wish shown in Fig(F) and (G)

Step 4:

The Complete recognition of the remaining features in the imported body. When recognition is complete, the imported body no longer appears in the SOLIDWORKS Feature Manager design tree.
