Empty SOLIDWORKS Drawing Views

An Easy Guide to Resolve Empty SOLIDWORKS Drawing Views

An Easy Guide to Resolve Empty SOLIDWORKS Drawing Views

A troubleshooting guide is always useful to have at hand when working with a new program. You never know when you’ll run into a hurdle that needs to be solved. In this post, we’ll take you through a troubleshooting guide for empty SOLIDWORKS drawing views.

Read on for more details about this topic and tips that may help you solve the problem in a more efficient manner.

What is a drawing view?

A drawing view is a type of dynamic sheet that is used to display information about a model. It is created using an embedded sheet and a dynamic sheet.

You can have multiple drawings open at the same time, and each drawing has an independent sheet with its own properties. When you close any one of them, it will also close all the other drawings that are other sub-elements of that sheet.

The embedded sheet displays the model, and the dynamic sheet is what you see when you open the drawing. In other words, the embedded sheet is the model, and the dynamic sheet is the cover sheet.

What are empty drawing views?

Empty drawing views are a problem related to the missing view on a sheet while drawing. It is a very common issue in SOLIDWORKS, and it can happen for many different reasons.

One reason why you may see an empty sheet is because of missing views. When these are missing, the sheet will show nothing. In short, if there are no views showing on a sheet, it won’t show anything.

Another reason why you may see an empty sheet is that you have an issue with the view settings of the sheet. When these are set to invisible, the sheet view will show nothing.

If you are experiencing the problem that all the views of the sheet are missing, then you can try the following solutions.

How to find empty drawing views in SOLIDWORKS?

As mentioned previously, empty drawing views are caused by missing or hidden views on a sheet. You can easily spot them because the sheet will be completely empty.

There are two ways to find out if you have any empty drawing views. The first one is by using the View Status command. Simply click on the status bar at the top of the drawing area, and you will see this option.

The second way is by using the View Control command. This is found under the View menu, and it gives you more options related to the views on a sheet.

Solve the problem with SOLIDWORKS Drawing Views

The most efficient way to solve the problem with SOLIDWORKS drawing views is by changing the view settings of the sheet. If you have an empty sheet because of hidden views, you can simply change the view settings of the sheet to visible.

You can also change the options by right-clicking on the sheet tab and selecting the view settings from the context menu. In both cases, you will have the view settings visible on the sheet.

If you don’t want the sheet to show anything, simply change the settings to invisible. If you want to display something, change the settings accordingly.

Simply changing the view settings of the sheet won’t solve the problem, but it will at least let you see something. You should also change the view settings in the model so that it overrides the settings of the sheet.

Solve the problem with Empty SOLIDWORKS Drawing Views

In SOLIDWORKS do you view empty views when you open the drawing?

Where did the views and notes go?

Empty SOLIDWORKS Drawing views

We are not happy to see our drawing views displayed like the above image right?

Let's dig deep and know why it is happening.

What causes views to be empty?

What happened was that the model(s) may have been moved from their previous folder to another folder, but the drawing is not updated with references, so it opens with blank displays Because the specified model drawing does not expect it to be.

If the drawing is already open while the model is moved to the new location, the issue is now resolved. The drawing reference will be updated.

How to resolve the empty view Issue?

  • Close the drawing (no need to save)
  • Next, we have to choose Solidworks Home tab > resent document > reference

SOLIDWORKS Drawing - select references

Select File > Open > select the drawing, but do not open yet > References > double-click

The model > browse to the model’s new location

SOLIDWORKS Drawing - importing assembly

Double-click the model to browse to its new location

SOLIDWORKS Drawing - Edit reference file

The new folder path dialog box will be displayed in green and press OK to confirm the change

Now, we need to select the recent drawing.

SOLIDWORKS Drawing - select drawing

Thus drawing Views are now populated!

Resolved empty SOLIDWORKS Drawing views

The drawing will now be displayed in all views, and all Annotations will be displayed.

The cable reference properties tab will be opened. We have to provide our specification which includes dia,, color, cores, core dia these are the important things needed to be updated in the property tab

Electrical Cable properties

STEP 3: Assign cable core properties

Cable core properties are found on the same tab as the third choice at the top. There, we must enter the number of cores required for the cable.

electrical cable core properties

We must also indicate the dia of the core we require, as well as control over whether it is a miscellaneous, power, or neutral core. This tab also allows users to pick the colors of the cores.

STEP 4: Assign cable between components

After we have built the new cable, we must place it and assign it to the components that require it.

associate cable cores

Wires are drawn & cable is created after the components have been placed.

STEP 5: Associate cable cores

Now, we must use the new cable option to add the cable to the associated cable cores tab. After that, we must choose the cable we made in the library manager.

At the bottom, we must select four wires in addition to the four cores.

After choosing all of them, we should use the associate cable cores option at the top of the page as shown in the below image.

How to Use Image Tracer Power Tool in DraftSight

How to Use Image tracer Power Tool in DraftSight

DraftSight is free CAD software that is easy to learn and use. It provides powerful tools for 2D and 3D design, allowing you to create complex models. One of these tools is the power tool.

A power tool is a plugin that provides an alternate way to do something in DraftSight. Power tools can help with things like rendering, text editing, and joining solids.

This post will teach you about the power tool available in Draftsight - Image tracer and how to install one if you need it in your workflow.

The Image Tracer

The image tracer power tool is a plugin that allows you to create a trace of an image. It's useful for quickly generating models from actual images instead of having to spend hours modeling them. The software reads the pixel information of the image and creates a 3D model as it processes the information. This saves time in DraftSight because you don't have to manually model everything yourself.

Image tracer is an example of a power tool. It can be found on the Plugins tab under More Tools > Image Tracer. It's easy to install; all you need to do is unpack it and then double-click the .dcr file. Installing it will automatically place a shortcut on your desktop for you to use later if you need it in your workflow.

How to install the Image Tracer?

When you open the DraftSight software, you'll notice it has a blue toolbar near the top and a ribbon across the top. If you click on that toolbar, there will be an option for plugins. Click on that and then scroll down until you find "Image Tracer."

Click on "Image Tracer" to install it in your DraftSight software. This plugin is one of many tools available (we are only focusing on this one).

After installing the plugin in your DraftSight software, you'll notice there's now an extra bar at the bottom of your screen. There will also be a new icon at the top right corner of your ribbon that represents Image Tracer.

The 3 things you need to know about the Image tracer power tool

    • Convert raster images in .bmp, png, and .jpg formats into accurate and editable lines and curves in DWG files.
    • The images can range widely from floor plans to artistic logos saving massive time and tedious effort to manually retrieve and edit the image elements.
    • Image tracer feature is available in all versions except Draftsight standard.

    1. When you select the image tracer feature, it shows the property manager of it.
    2. Here you can select the profile type to convert as.
    3. Attach an image that wants to be converted as dwg
    4. In this case, I use the SOLIDWORKS logo, so selecting the type as logo
  • After selecting the type of profile, it prompts for selecting the image
  • Select the starts converting
  • You can use the transparency option to change the transparency of the image or you can use the hide image check box to hide the image
  • As a result, here is the logo of SOLIDWORKS. Using the join command, I can join the individual lines.

Now that you know what the power tools in DraftSight are, you’re ready to start using them.

The Image Tracer lets you take a picture of anything and automatically converts it into a traceable, editable 2D line drawing. This is easier than drawing it all by hand, and is a great way to reuse, cut, and paste.

Simulation software can also be used to evaluate the effectiveness of a process after it has been implemented. The user can then experiment with different variables to find the best solution.

For example, simulation software can be used to optimize the performance of a machine tool. The user may want to determine how different speeds, feeds, and depths affect tool wear and part quality. Simulation software can simulate many different combinations of these variables, allowing the user to try out different solutions and determine which combination is best.

      • How fast should the machine run?
      • What is the ideal speed for cutting & best cut depth?
      • What is the most efficient feed rate?

The answers to these questions depend on many factors including material type and cost as well as part accuracy and tolerance requirements. Simulation software allows users to experiment with different combinations and find an optimal solution that meets all design constraints.

How to use CAE and CFD to optimize your industrial processes?

There are two main types of simulation software used by industrial engineers

      1. CAE (Computer-Aided Engineering)
      2. CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics)

What is CAE software & its applications?

CAE software is used to analyze a product's structure & optimize the design of a product. Thus make sure it meets all structural criteria, such as weight, strength, or stiffness.

For example, FEA can help you optimize your product design to make sure it is structurally sound.

An Ultimate Guide to SOLIDWORKS Configuration Properties

An Ultimate Guide to SOLIDWORKS Configuration Properties

    What are SOLIDWORKS Configuration Properties?

Most companies use SOLIDWORKS configurations properties to create custom designs in order to control the product results or details. These configurations are like LEGO building blocks and make up the skeleton of a 3D product. Before exploring the types of configurations, let’s first understand what they do internally.

Configuration properties are a set of settings that allow you to control the way your part or assembly behaves. They let you customize the way SOLIDWORKS handles your models, making it possible to fine-tune their performance and appearance.

Configuration properties can be accessed in a number of ways, but the easiest way to change them is through the ConfigurationManager.

This window contains all of the settings for each configuration, and it can be opened by going to Tools > Configuration Manager.

    Purpose of configuration

Configurations allow you to create multiple variations of a part or assembly model within a single document.

In part documents, configurations allow you to create families of parts with different dimensions, features, and properties, including custom properties. Simplified versions of the design by suppressing components.

    Without component configuration
    With component configuration

How to edit SOLIDWORKS Configuration Properties?

Configuration can act as a different version of a part in the same file.

For example, We used bolts (M10-M26) for creating configuration with multi-dimensions.

When you create or edit configurations manually, you use the add configuration in property Manager. Drawings do not have configurations but they display different configurations of the file reference.

    Use configuration:

Configuration is located in the property Manager. Click the icon the configuration tab has opened. In the configuration manager tab configuration and display, states are be listed.

Click the point and drag down to split the property manager. It will helpful for using configuration and feature manager design tree as a same tab, See the image for your reference.

    Adding configuration:

To add configuration right-click the part in the configuration manager design tree. Create name, choose bill of material option complete the command.

Options are available to control the name in the bill of material. They are document name, configuration name, user-specified name.

Note: In this configure the special characters such as the slash (/) not allowed.

The part number displayed when used in a bill of materials Specifies how to list the assembly or part in a Bill of Materials. Select an option
Document Name The part number is the same as the document name.
Configuration Name The part number is the same as the configuration name.
User Specified Name The part number is a name that you enter.

In the sketch, while applying smart dimension a modified dialog box appears. Click the ‘This configuration’ after clicking ok. Configure has added on that particular dimension and that active configuration.

Follow these steps is same for next new adding configuration.

While using ‘This configuration’ all smart dimensions are particular for that configuration. While using ‘All configurations’ is the value used in all created configuration. While using ‘Specify configuration’ is that the particular dimensions are used common for all created configuration.

After created configuration the various lists of bolt sizes appeared on single part file. For reference the image shown.

When to make changes to Configuration Properties

There are a few instances where you might need to alter your Configuration Properties.

For example, you might need to change the values if you're experiencing errors or if you want to optimize your design.

Another common situation where you might need to make changes is when you're working with different versions of SOLIDWORKS.

In these cases, the best practice is to create a new configuration file and rename it according to the version of SOLIDWORKS you're using. This will help ensure that all your files are properly organized and easy to find.

When not to make changes to Configuration Properties

Configuration Properties are an important part of your SOLIDWORKS file, and making changes to them can be helpful in customizing your design.

However, there are some times when you should avoid making changes. Here are a few situations when you should avoid altering Configuration Properties:

    When you want to

      • Create a new part or assembly from an existing one
      • Send your file to someone else
      • Save a copy of your file with a different name

Best practices for editing Configuration Properties

When editing Configuration Properties, it's important to keep the following in mind:

      • ALWAYS save your changes before exiting the PropertyManager
      • Make small, incremental changes rather than big jumps
      • If you're not sure what a setting does, leave it at its default value
      • NEVER edit a property that will impact the performance of your parts or assemblies

SOLIDWORKS Configuration Properties provide a way to customize how SOLIDWORKS behaves and how your data is processed. It's important to be aware of the implications of changing these settings and to use them in a way that will best optimize your workflow.

With a little bit of understanding and some trial and error, you can master SOLIDWORKS Configuration Properties and make them work for you.
